I love every step of the custom creation process, from selecting fabrics with the client to designing and sewing the final product here in my workroom. For twenty-eight years, I’ve enjoyed creating custom window treatments for every type of room and style home possible.

Even though ready-made window treatments are becoming more and more available in stores, I truly believe that custom window treatments are a far better investment for your home. They are luxurious and beautiful, with a made-to-order fit that simply can’t be found in any mass produced product. Read on to discover some of the key differences between custom window treatments and ready-made and why custom window treatments always showcase a high quality end product.

What makes a custom window treatment truly custom-made? I have come up with five main components that make custom window treatments stand out from ready-made products. Here at KH Window Fashions, we incorporate all five components into every window treatment that leaves our workroom. When compared to the limitations presented in ready-made treatments, custom treatments reflect a loving investment into creating the home of your dreams.

One:

Custom window treatments are designed to fit your window. Whether you have arched windows or tall windows, custom treatments can accommodate any window structure. Ready-made, on the other hand, mostly come in predetermined lengths such as 84, 96, or 108 inches. Plus, ready-mades usually fit a range of widths, rather than the exact measurement of your windows.

Two:

You can expect better quality workmanship with custom window treatments. One of the trademarks of a KH Window Fashions design is pattern matching. That means the pattern motif is centered within the treatment and matched at all seams. Plus, every treatment within the room is matched to the exact same pattern motif to give them a uniform appearance. Pattern matching takes time and expertise and is not commonly found on ready-made treatments.

Three:

In custom window treatments, our standard lining is a flannel interlining and soft blackout lining. The lining protects the fabric from sun damage and keeps the coloring consistent throughout the treatment so the sun doesn’t bleed through the fabric. If lining is included on ready-mades, it is usually too thin to make an impact.

Four:

Fabric quality is also a main concern in custom window treatments. We have a wide selection of fabric patterns and types, with new samples arriving daily. When working on a treatment, I hand-select fabrics that fit both your home and your window style. In a custom window treatment, the possibilities are endless. Ready-made treatments are limited to a smaller selection of patterns and fabric types.

 

Five:

It’s all in the details. This has been the motto of KH Window Fashions for twenty-eight years. Custom window treatments are full of tiny, specific details that set the treatments apart from the rest. Details like trims, cording, ruffles, and more are unique to custom treatments. No two houses ever receive the same treatment; each custom window treatment is tailored down to the tiniest details to fit the client’s needs and vision.

I love the clean, classic look of shutters, and I wanted to share some of my favorite shutter styles with you in today’s blog.

While preparing for the blog post, I discovered an interesting fact about the two main styles — plantation and traditional. The main difference between these two styles are the louver sizes. Traditional shutters, which were originally designed for the smaller New England windows, has a louver size of 1.25 inches while plantation shutters, thanks to the large windows popular further South, have louver sizes of 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5 inches. Today, however, large windows are more common in New England, and so plantation shutters are too!

Four and half louver size

Louver sizes impact your window visibility. The larger the louver, the more you’re able to enjoy natural sunlight and the view outside your winder. Smaller louvers restrict lighting and limit visibility. Plus, shutters with larger louvers need less louvers. Less louvers mean less horizontal lines, creating a cleaner, simplified decor.

In fact, four and half louvers provide 39% more view-through between the louvers than three and half and 130% more than two and half louvers. Wow!

Can you see the vertical rod on the center of the panels of the right side shutter? This shutter has the traditional front tilt bar that opens and shuts the louvers.

Now look at the picture on the left. These panels have a rear tilt bar, which is located discreetly on the side rear of the panels. It’s easy to open and close these shutters. Instead of finagling a rod, it only takes a touch of your hand on one louver and voila! All the louvers rotate together.

This set of images shows one of my favorite advantages of the rear tilt bar. This is the same window on both pictures, but the rear tilt bar is divided into two sections, which allows each section to rotate independently.

In right picture of the window, the lower section is closed for privacy while the upper section remains open to invite in the light. However, both sections can be open at the same time, like shown on the image to the left, or closed at the same time.

The choice is yours. I can help you determine the number of louvers on each tilt bar.

Here are two examples of recent shutter installations in two different homes.

Both shutters have single (1) panel designs and the louvers are 3.5 inches. The shutter on the left is a full window, three-sided framed, and the on the right, is a cafe style two-sided framed shutter. The left shutter is on the first floor bedroom, so full privacy was a must! The right one is located in a fifth floor condo where the priority was balancing the gorgeous view with privacy. This is more than just a saying at KH Window Fashions, Inc., it’s our practice. When you’re designing for your home, everyone’s drapery design style is different, and it is those little details that set every home apart.

Virtual Design is my favorite way to explore every decor option in a room. With Virtual Design, I take a real picture of the space and create a virtual draft of the window treatments. This gives me the opportunity to picture the outcome and share it with my clients before even ordering the fabric.

Even with a set of classic drapes, there are multiple design style options. Check out some different styles below. Which one is your favorite? What is your design style?

When deciding a design style, always start with an open canvas. These bare windows are the perfect clean slate to build on in Virtual Design. Drapes are especially hard to visualize, and with so many styles to choose from, it’s difficult to know which ones are best suited for a space. Using this original picture, I’ve created several curtain examples to study before choosing the final style.

Color can have a significant impact on the feeling of a room. Check out our psychology of color series to find out the effect of warm, cool, and neutral tones on a space.

I like to extend the panels beyond the window. It tends to enlarge both the window and the room, but most importantly it invites more light into the space. Look at the drapes on the left. Can you see how they make the window look larger?

Asymmetrical drapes, as pictured above, instantly draw your eyes to the space in the middle of the windows. This style creates a perfect focus spot for a prized piece of artwork that feels natural and inviting.
And if you’re searching for a soft, sleek, couture look, consider drapes without a standard rod, like the ones pictured on the right.

Color block drapes are a unique way to emphasize a specific color and break up the texture of the main fabric. Whether you choose to position your color block in the middle of the panels or along the bottom, notice how the horizontal lines of the blocking match perfectly with preexisting on the window pans and windowsill. Color blocking should never interrupt the flow of a window, only enhance it.

Banding is an increasingly popular way to add a little flair to classic window treatments and upholstery. You can learn more about banding here.

Relaxed Roman or Flat-Fold Roman? That is the question. The Relaxed Roman on the left adds a gentle curve to the treatment, automatically creating a softer look for any room, but the Flat-Fold Roman on the right, with its straight line and banded edge, offers a streamlined and classic look that fits in almost any household.
